Get Connected, a Drug Use Prevention Programme which is aimed at promoting awareness among Grade 8 students on attitudes and skills that help prevent substance abuse and smoking, was launched this morning at the James Burty David State Secondary School, in Port Louis. The programme will be offered on a pilot basis in 48 public and private Secondary Schools across Mauritius and Rodrigues.
A group of 36 students from the James Burty David State Secondary School are benefiting from the Get Connected programme which is targeting young people aged between 12 and 14 years. The comprehensive programme will be delivered over 12 sessions with one session of one hour held on a weekly basis.
During the course of the programme the transfer of knowledge to the students will be done in an interactive way, making learning more interesting. The twelve scheduled sessions will address the following: opening Get Connected; to be or not to be connected; choices, risk and protection; what you believe (whether it is based on real facts); smoking the cigarette, drug (getting informal); express yourself; get up and stand up; party tiger; get informed; coping competences; problem-solving and decision-making; and, evaluating whether goals have been reached.
