The Ministry of Agro-Industry and Food Security would give a one-off grant of Rs 10,000 per arpent to small registered planters who have undertaken onion cultivation in 2021, following the unprecedented price increase of fertilizers and other chemical inputs and adverse climatic conditions. The payment would be effected by the Agricultural Marketing Board based on the list submitted by the Food and Agricultural Research and Extension Institute.

Reward money to informers and police officers was granted 34 times for a total amount of Rs 5,502,520 for the period July 2016 to June 2017.

The Prime Minister, Mr Pravind Jugnauth, recalled that reward money to informers was instrumental in assisting the Police in the fight against drug trafficking and other crimes, and that it was in line with Police Standing Order No. 122. He stated that according to information obtained from the Acting Commissioner of Police, the allocation of reward money was undertaken as follows:

• Rs 254,270 to police officers posted to the ADSU in respect of 631 cases of uprooting of cannabis plants;
• Rs 95,350 to personnel of Police Helicopter Squadron;
• Rs 516,000 to those falling in the grade of Inspector of Police/Police Sergeant acting as in charge field teams and above posted to ADSU;
• Rs 3,686,900 to informers of ADSU; and
• Rs 950,000 to informers of the Central Criminal Investigation Department (CCID).

Seychelles has signed a historic pact to halt and reverse loss and land degradation by 2030 at the UN Climate Summit in Glasgow on Tuesday, said State House.

President Wavel Ramkalawan signed the pact together with other heads of states and governments at the event on Forests and Land Use.

More than 100 world leaders have signed the pact in a deal hailed by some observers as one of the “first major outcomes” from the COP26 Climate Summit.

Mauritius’ main exports markets, namely the United Kingdom, France and other European countries have been severely impacted by the COVID-19 disease, with figures showing a decrease of 19% from January to September 2020.

As at date, three 5-star hotels, eight 4-star hotels and six 3-star hotels are at the disposal of Mauritians, foreigners having either a residence or an occupation permit and tourists for the mandatory 14-day quarantine.
Covid-19 test and medical treatment costs, to the tune of Rs 13 500, will be free of charge for Mauritian citizens. Quarantine costs for Mauritians who were abroad for medical treatment will be covered by Government.
As regards flights operated by Air Mauritius, the routes Mauritius-Paris and Mauritius-Reunion Island will be opened; whilst Emirates will operate one flight per week from Dubai. Air Mauritius will fly twice a week to Paris and on every Monday to Reunion Island. However, due to the alarming situation in India and South-Africa, no flights will be allowed to and from these countries until further notice.

Sinusitis is the inflammation of the sinuses where these air-filled cavities located in the bones of the skull communicate with the nose. Sinusitis is most often a complication of the common cold. Acute sinusitis lasts a few weeks.

In Mauritius, cases related to sinusitis are on the rise in this winter season. Hospital figures released show the number of identified cases increased by about 60% between June and July 2020. It is also said that of the 300 patients who attend daily the hospitals of the country, 90% are linked to sinus inflammation or allergies.

According to Chinese authorities, 106 people have died from the new coronavirus. The number of newly infected cases has almost doubled. The total number of confirmed cases in China rose to 4,515 as of January 27, compared to 2,835 the day before.China has tightened travel restrictions to try to curb the spread of the virus. 

The country has postponed the start of the spring semester in schools, colleges, high schools, universities and higher education establishments in the country, the education ministry said on Tuesday. The coronavirus causes a severe acute respiratory infection and there is no specific cure or vaccine. Most of the deaths are due to elderly people or to preexisting respiratory problems.

The Agricultural Marketing Board (AMB) has fixed the wholesale price for onions and potatoes at Rs 15 per half kilo in Moka. On the other hand, AMB in its 15 or so outlets across the country, markets potatoes and onions at the recommended price of 16 rupees per half kilo. Very favorable prices for consumers. It says also that prices vary, because there has been a liberalization of the selling price on the local market.
