At the end of December 2017, there were 531,797 vehicles registered at the National Transport Authority (+4.8%) compared to 507,676 at the end of December 2016.

During 2017, some 29,386 vehicles were registered whilst 5,265 were put out of circulation.

In 2017, a total of 29,627 road accidents were reported against 29,277in 2016, showing anincrease of 1.2%.

A total of 58,295 vehicles were involved in road traffic accidents during 2017 against 57,496in 2016, i.e. anincrease of 1.4%.

The number of casualties registered in 2017 was 4,199 compared to 3,862in the preceding year, upby 8.7%. Among the casualties, around 40.2% were riders of auto/motor cycles, 24.0% passengers, 16.3% pedestrians, 15.3% driversand 4.2% pedal cyclists.

Compared to 2016, the number of fatal accidents reported during 2017 went up by 15.2% (from 132 to 152) and the number of persons who died as a result of road accidents increased by 8.7% (from 144 to 157).

 

Despite the economic importance of SMEs, their share of trade is disproportionately small. This is mainly because they are unaware of the potentially wider market and they might not have the resources to implement what may seem complex trading procedures. But new technologies are helping to pare back these obstacles and create a more level playing field for smaller companies.

The trading system is there for everyone, but SMEs can often find it harder to reach markets. One major step forward to facilitate access to market for SMEs is the use of barcodes. For SMEs to enter the distribution channels, it is a must for the products to have a barcode. According to GS1,

 

over 8 billion of barcodes are scanned daily in the world. That’s a sharp increase since the barcode made its commercial debut in 1974. Barcodes are one of the most innovative elements of business process automation and can help to track sales of products, categorise and centralise information, save time and increase efficiency.
