Unemployment rate estimated at 6.7%

According to Statistics Mauritius, among an estimated 987,400 Mauritians aged 16 years and over in the fourth quarter of 2017, around 587,600 were economically active, with 548,000 employed and 39,600 unemployed (16,300 males and 23,300 females). The remaining 399,800 persons were inactive.

The unemployment rate for the fourth quarter of 2017 is estimated at 6.7%, higher than the rate of 6.6% at the fourth quarter 2016 and lower than the rate of 7.0% at the third quarter 2017. Unemployment rate for year 2017 stood at 7.1% compared to 7.3% for 2016.

 

531,797 vehicles on our roads

At the end of December 2017, there were 531,797 vehicles registered at the National Transport Authority (+4.8%) compared to 507,676 at the end of December 2016. During 2017, some 29,386 vehicles were registered whilst 5,265 were put out of circulation.

In 2017, a total of 29,627 road accidents were reported against 29,277 in 2016, showing an increase of 1.2%. A total of 58,295 vehicles were involved in road traffic accidents during 2017 against 57,496 in 2016, i.e. an increase of 1.4%.

The number of casualties registered in 2017 was 4,199 compared to 3,862 in the preceding year, up by 8.7%. Among the casualties, around 40.2% were riders of auto/motor cycles, 24.0% passengers, 16.3% pedestrians, 15.3% drivers and 4.2% pedal cyclists. Compared to 2016, the number of fatal accidents reported during 2017 went up by 15.2% (from 132 to 152) and the number of persons who died as a result of road accidents increased by 8.7% (from 144 to 157).

 

A quand l’augmentation du tarif d’eau?

Metro Express

The Metro Express Mock-up train will be displayed at the Municipal Council of Port-Louis till 07 April 2018 before moving on to other municipal and district councils across the country.  The objective of the exhibition which is to shed light on the concept, design and operation of the Metro express project.  The Mock-up train, he said, is the model of the Urbos 100 3rd generation LRVs which forms part of the innovative and high-quality trains, specifically designed by Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles (CAF).  The estimated construction cost for the Metro Express Project which is Rs. 18.8 billion, of which half of the sum is a grant offered by the Republic of India and the other tranche is a line of credit with a significantly low interest rate of 1.6%.

 

Aurore Perraud se defend

La députée Aurore Perraud n’a pas passé un mardi tranquille à l’Assemblée nationale. Une photo brandie par Pravind Jugnauth au Parlement  la montrant assise à côté d’Alvaro Sobrinho l’a mise hors d’elle.  Elle s’en est prise au Premier ministre, le disant qu’elle s’attendait mieux de lui.  Elle s’est même demandé au Premier ministre de “guette ceki pé assise prés kotte twa la”. En faisant référence à Ivan Collendavelloo.  Plus tard, en début de soirée, elle a eu un accrochage avec Bobby Hurreeram.

 

India to help in solar technology

The Prime Minister of the Republic of India announced that the International Solar Alliance and the Indian Government would create 500 training slots for member countries; provide consultancy support as project preparation facility to enable member countries to design bankable projects; initiate a Solar Technology Mission with international focus, to lead research and development in solar energy; and finance solar projects worth nearly US$ 1.4 billion under lines of credit in  15 countries, in addition to the projects already approved under Line of Credit.

 

India is financing a solar farm project of 8 MW, worth USD 10 million at Henrietta under its Line of Credit.  The French President also committed an additional 700 million Euros to solar energy by 2022, taking his Government’s total commitment to one billion Euros.

 

Metro-Express: The first trains are expected in Mauritius early June 2019

Juan José Garcia, president of CAF, the company mandated to build the vehicles of the Metro-Express has presented a model of the train that will be used in Mauritius.

According Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth, the first trains are expected in Mauritius in early June 2019. They will be tested and will be operational on the route Rose-Hill / Port-Louis in September 2019.

Mr Jugnauth also stressed that the project has well advanced thanks in particular to the financial assistance of the Indian Government and to add that he wishes that he be remembered as an avant-garde Prime Minister.

Chapeau Banque de Maurice!

Alors que le taux d’intérêt à l’épargne ne cesse de chuter chez les banques commerciales du pays — entre 2 et 4% l’an en janvier 2015 à 1,20 et 2% l’an en janvier 2018 — voilà que la Banque de Maurice propose une émission d’obligations à 4,25% l’an sur une période de trois ans, appelé “Golden Jubilee Bond” avec effet au 15 mars 2018. L’émission restera ouverte pendant une période de trois mois et sera clôturée le 15 juin 2018 ou avant si la Banque le décide.

D’abord, il faut saluer cette décision d’offrir un meilleur taux d’intérêt aux épargnants par la Banque de Maurice. Cela devrait encourager les Mauriciens à épargner davantage. Jusqu’ici, il faut dire que tel n’est pas le cas parce que les banques commerciales offrent des intérêts “peanuts” à moins de 2% l’an. Si cette situation persiste, et si le taux d’intérêt à l’épargne continue à chuter, dans quelque temps, les Mauriciens se retrouveront dans une situation où ils devraient payer les banques pour que ces dernières gardent leur argent en toute sécurité. Il faut prier que cela n’arrive pas car le pays en souffrira sur le plan des investissements.

Voyons maintenant les modalités de ce “Golden Jubilee Bond.” L’obligation sera émise en multiples de Rs 25,000 pour les résidents de Maurice jusqu’à un montant d’investissement cumulatif maximal de Rs 5,000,000 par investisseur, que ce soit seul ou conjointement et aux ONG enregistrées localement fonctionnant sur un but non lucratif. Les particuliers pourront s’enregistrer au nom d’un adulte célibataire, deux adultes conjointement, remboursables conjointement à eux ou à l’un ou à l’autre ou au survivant et un mineur par un tuteur.

Des intérêts au taux de 4,25% par an seront payés trimestriellement sur le “Golden Jubilee Bond”. Le premier versement sera effectué le 15 juin 2018 et ensuite, les 15 septembre, 15 décembre, 15 mars et 15 juin de chaque année au porteur inscrit, ou à sa demande, à toute personne qu’il aura nommée. L’intérêt sur l’obligation s’accumulera à compter de la date d’achat et cessera à la date d’échéance. Le remboursement anticipé sera considéré au cas par cas.

La vente de l’obligation sera effectuée par l’intermédiaire des banques offrant ces services et aux guichets de la Banque de Maurice à Port Louis et Rodrigues. Les investisseurs potentiels sont priés de contacter leurs banques. Les banques doivent se conformer aux dispositions de la loi de 2002 sur le renseignement financier et le blanchiment d’argent et aux notes d’orientation sur la LBC / FT publiées par la Banque. Pour les achats effectués à la Banque de Maurice, les investisseurs éligibles pourront effectuer leurs paiements soit en espèces, par chèque bancaire, par prélèvement automatique ou par l’intermédiaire du MACSS (Mauritius Automated Clearing and Settlement System). Encore une fois, bravo à la Banque de Maurice.
