According to Statistics Mauritius, among an estimated 987,400 Mauritians aged 16 years and over in the fourth quarter of 2017, around 587,600 were economically active, with 548,000 employed and 39,600 unemployed (16,300 males and 23,300 females). The remaining 399,800 persons were inactive.

The unemployment rate for the fourth quarter of 2017 is estimated at 6.7%, higher than the rate of 6.6% at the fourth quarter 2016 and lower than the rate of 7.0% at the third quarter 2017. Unemployment rate for year 2017 stood at 7.1% compared to 7.3% for 2016.

 

At the end of December 2017, there were 531,797 vehicles registered at the National Transport Authority (+4.8%) compared to 507,676 at the end of December 2016. During 2017, some 29,386 vehicles were registered whilst 5,265 were put out of circulation.

In 2017, a total of 29,627 road accidents were reported against 29,277 in 2016, showing an increase of 1.2%. A total of 58,295 vehicles were involved in road traffic accidents during 2017 against 57,496 in 2016, i.e. an increase of 1.4%.

The number of casualties registered in 2017 was 4,199 compared to 3,862 in the preceding year, up by 8.7%. Among the casualties, around 40.2% were riders of auto/motor cycles, 24.0% passengers, 16.3% pedestrians, 15.3% drivers and 4.2% pedal cyclists. Compared to 2016, the number of fatal accidents reported during 2017 went up by 15.2% (from 132 to 152) and the number of persons who died as a result of road accidents increased by 8.7% (from 144 to 157).
