Mauritius wages war on drugs

Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth on Wednesday said that “Mauritius is at war against drugs and it is a war that we must win and we’ll win.”

Speaking at a workshop on drug addiction, the Prime Minister recalled that after taking office in 2016, he decided to wage a war on drugs and placed this issue as one of his top priorities.
“My approach to dealing with the drugs issue is based one of compassion on the one hand and zero-tolerance, on the other hand. Compassion for the drug users because most of them have to be seen as victims rather than criminals. Zero tolerance with drug traffickers and dealers for they are the real criminals”, he said.

Mr Jugnauth said his government will make sure that all the drug traffickers and dealers in Mauritius “are where they belong, that is behind bars.”
He said the authorities are making good progress in this endeavour.
“As a result of the measures put in place and the recent big seizures effected, a shortage of hard drugs such as heroin is being noted”, he observed, before assuring the population that the war on drugs he has started “will only end when we win”.

NGOs believe that more than 10,000 Mauritians use drugs in the island.

Le Premier ministre, Pravind Jugnauth, dit avoir fait de la guerre contre la drogue, une de ses priorités. Ilintervenait, ce matin, à l’ouverture de la troisième édition de la conférence organisée par CUT’s, sur la ” Harm Reduction”. Le chef du gouvernement a de plus indiqué, qu l’un des résultats de cette lutte menée à Maurice est le manque de drogues dures dans le pays.

 

Metro Express: Ministerial Committee to examine the project’s impact on the bus industry

A Ministerial Committee, set up by Government, will examine the impact of the Metro Express Project on the bus industry and make recommendations accordingly.

This decision has been taken following the apprehensions of bus companies operating along the corridor of the Project, and the issues raised by trade unions representing the bus industry workers.

 

The committee comprises the following Ministers: Minister of Public Infrastructure and Land Transport; Minister of Arts and Culture; Minister of Social Integration and Economic Empowerment; Minister of Labour, Industrial Relations, Employment and Training; Minister of Local Government and Outer Islands; Minister of Civil Service and Administrative Reforms; Minister of Financial Services and Good Governance and the Attorney General, Minister of Justice, Human Rights and Institutional Reforms.

 

Moreover, a Joint Project Monitoring Committee on the Metro Express Project, under the chairmanship of the Minister of Public Infrastructure and Land Transport and the High Commissioner of India to Mauritius, met last week to review physical progress, and ensure the smooth implementation of the Project, as well as ascertain conformity to the prescribed quality standards, time frame and cost.  The Joint Committee will meet at regular intervals.

 

A Monitoring Committee also meets on a weekly basis to monitor the implementation of the Project.

 

Exports

In July 2017, total exports fell by 7.2% compared to the previous month and by 0.6% compared to July 2016. The United Kingdom (12.7%), France (12.6%), South Africa (9.6%), and USA (9.4%) were our major exports destinations in July 2017 while our imports were mainly from India (18.5%), China (15.5%), South Africa (10.7%) and France (7.7%).

 

Le CEB lance le projet ‘Home Solar’

Le Central Electricity Board (CEB), à travers sa filiale, la Green Energy Company Limited, lance le projet ‘Home Solar’ qui consiste à installer des panneaux photovoltaïques sur le toit des maisons des familles à faibles revenus. Le kit photovoltaïque sera raccordé au réseau du CEB et les familles concernées pourront à terme bénéficier gratuitement de 50 kilowatt heure électricité par mois.
