November 14: World Diabetes Day

Diabetes, a chronic condition caused by a lack or lack of use of a hormone called insulin, can not be cured. Between 1980 and 2014, the number of people suffering from diabetes almost quadrupled in the world, from 108 million to 422 million. The World Diabetes Day of November 14, 2018 is an opportunity to take stock, on some actions carried out this year to prevent and fight against this disease.

In Mauritius, about 50% of the population is affected by diabetes, either by being diabetic or carrying disease susceptibility genes. A situation deemed alarming, according to Dr. Veenoo Basant Rai, president of the Mauritius Diabetes Association, which also emphasizes that one can live with diabetes by exercising control through a healthy diet and a balanced lifestyle.
