Mauritius-India: MoU signed to further strengthen cooperative sector

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at further strengthening the cooperative sector was signed yesterday. The signatories were the Chairman of the Mauritius Cooperative Alliance Ltd (MCAL), Mr D. Kona Yerukunondu, and the Chief Executive of National Cooperative Union of India, Mr N. Satyanarayana.

This MoU will help consolidate bilateral relations between the two countries in the following areas of cooperation: capacity building through exchange of experts for the development of cooperatives; exploring the possibility of holding joint workshops on issues of mutual interest and best practices for development of cooperatives; and enabling visits and training of co-operators.

The cooperative sector in India which exists since 1929 has witnessed huge success in the field of sugarcane, dairy products and credit unions, amongst others. India should take pride of its vibrant cooperative sector and should continue extending its support for further development of cooperatives in Mauritius. Mauritian co-operators will soon benefit from training by Indian experts.
