Introduction of the Use of Pesticides Bill

Agro-industry and food security Minister Mahen Seeruttun will on Tuesday introduce the Use of Pesticides Bill in Parliament in a bid to regulate, control and monitor the use of pesticides in the island.

In the Explanatory Memorandum circulated by the Minister, it is said that the main object of this Bill is to regulate, control and monitor the importation and use of pesticides in or on certain fresh fruits, plants, seeds or vegetables with a view to, inter alia, minimizing risks to human health and the environment.

It is also indicated that there shall be a Pesticides Regulatory Office develop strategies for the sound use and management of pesticides and for risk reduction associated with the use and disposal of empty pesticide containers, keep relevant information on pesticides, devise a Pesticides Code of Practice, advise the Minister on any matter related to the use of pesticides and do such other things as may be necessary for the purposes of this Act.
