Mauritius produces only about 10% of its milk consumption

About 4 million liters per year, which represents about 10% of local consumption. This volume represents three times less than the local production in 1989 (13.5 million liters). The rest is imported. This represents Rs 3 billion of “lost” in imported milk and dairy products.

Of the 1,958 breeders there are in twelve years, the country has today only 800, less than half. Dairy production is a sector “to be urgently consolidated”. Especially as local demand is increasing.
